Thermofax Silk-Screens from Our Shop
Send us your image files & we will turn them into Thermofax Silk-Screens for you or choose from our selection of images.

Supplies: Thermofax silk-screen, textile or acrylic paint, fabric or paper to print on, squeegee or plastic card such as fake credit cards that come in the mail, spatula or spoon that is for art use only - not food, optional: piece of cardboard or foam core to use as a printing surface

  • For fabric, tape or pin fabric to a printing table, a piece of cardboard, or a piece of foam core so that it lies flat. For paper, it may also be helpful to tape the paper down to your printing surface.
  • Place the Thermofax silk-screen on the fabric or paper with the smoother side of the screen down.
  • Use a spatula or spoon to place a line of paint along one edge of the screen. Usually the left side is more comfortable for right-handers and the right side is more comfortable for left-handers.
  • Hold squeegee vertical and use it to pull paint from one side of the screen to the other side over the image using an even pressure. While printing, hold the silk-screen in place with the other hand.
  • Repeat the printing process a few times until the entire image has been evenly covered with paint. It often takes practice to get the right pressure to get a nice print. It is also sometimes necessary to put more paint along the edge and then repeat the printing process.
  • To check to see if the image has printed clearly, firmly hold one side of the silk-screen in place, carefully lift up the other side, and peek underneath the screen. If areas of the image didn’t print, carefully lower the silk-screen and repeat the printing process with some more paint.
  • Once an image has printed well, simply lift the silk-screen and place it down in a new spot to silk-screen the image again. If prints are being overlapped it is a good idea to check the back of the silk screen for paint smudges and wipe them off with a rag before printing again.
  • To wash, rinse screen in water and rub away paint. A soft sponge can be used, but a rough one may scratch the silk-screen. Blot screen with a towel or allow it to air dry. (Soaking a Thermofax silk-screen can ruin it. Leaving paint to dry on the silk-screen without washing it will also ruin it.)
