Friends Fabric Art is the workshop and retail outlet for art quilt supplies, run by mother-daughter quilters Ann and Sonja Lee in Lowell ’s Western Avenue Studios.  We are pleased to offer a variety of talks, demonstrations and workshops tailored for quilt guilds. 

Demonstrations & Workshops Instructors Program Pricing

Trunk Shows:

Adding Sparkle and Unusual Embellishments to Quilts – Trunk show of art quilts and fiber art embellished with such things as foils, textile paints, Angelina, Tyvek, mulberry bark, silk cocoons and rods. Tips for usage will be discussed and demonstrated.
Easy Hand-dyes for Quilters – Trunk show of contemporary and art quilts made with hand-dyed fabrics and surface design techniques that can be easily undertaken by beginners.  Processes used will be described in detail.

Demonstrations & Workshops:

The following topics are offered as either talks that include demonstrations, mini workshops (30-60 minutes), or full-blown workshops (2-3 hours).  We are happy to accommodate the interests of your group and the time and space available.  For workshops there will be a $5 to $15 per participant materials fee in addition to the professional fee. 

Adding Sparkle and Shine to Your Quilts—Using foils, sparkly textile paints, Angelina fibers, Glitterati films and fibers

Spontaneous Fabric Collage for Small Quilts—Exercises to get you going, techniques for fusing, incorporating mixed media

2-D and 3-D Flowers for Quilts or JewelryLearn techniques for creating a stunning variety of flowers from silk cocoons and rods

Quick and Easy Bead-Making—Create your own bead embellishments from Tyvek, Angelina, Glitterati films and fibers, threads and other fibers

Texture Treasure Trove—Enhance visual texture in your quilts through the use of flexible barks, silk waste products, bamboo fibers, and unusual fabrics and threads

Easy Screen Printing*—Thermofax machines make it easy to print text and images on fabric for quilting.  Try out screen-printing and learn valuable tips and techniques.  Create your own custom screen if desired.

Introduction to Fabric Painting*—Tips and tricks for using fabric paints to make your own fabric or add highlights and embellishment to commercial textiles while maintaining the soft feel.  Try out a variety of techniques from washes to stenciling and stamping.

Introduction to Instant Set Fabric Dyeing*—Experiment with these fabric paints that act like dyes.  They do not require any special mixing (just add water) or follow-up processing other than ironing.  See what striking patterns you can get from folding, simple stitching, pole-wrapping and more.

* Workshops require easy access to a sink.

Instructors:

Sonja Lee (BA) majored in studio art. She has taught art for the Essex Art Center , Littleton Community Education, and private lessons.

Ann Lee (MS) is a former teacher who has been creating with fabrics and threads since childhood.



Program Pricing:

Trunk shows - $200 plus mileage. 

Workshops - $200 for 2 hours or $300 for 3 hours, plus mileage and materials. 

Materials fees range from $5-$15 per person depending on the workshop topic.  If you set the materials fee budget, we’ll adjust what we bring accordingly.  The materials fee typically covers a small sample of each item to be used, assuming that it is okay to bring more of each to sell if participants want more.
