I have been dabbling with lots of fun art making as part of Jane Dunnewold's "Creative Strength Training 2023" program. My mom and aunt have joined me participating this year! I helped to start a Topical Group inspired by Jane's art cloth books. I've been experimenting with different types of screen printing on fabric. This one uses Jane's multi-colored interfacing stencil printing method from her "Improvisational Screen Printing" book . I am lucky enough to have bought one of her original 2003 limited edition copies that has fabric samples in it when it was first printed. It is helpful to have the sample of interfacing she used provided with the book because it helps you figure out what type of medium-weight interfacing to use. In the photo below you can see the interfacing stencil has already been screened with the blue paint on scrap paper and I am about to screen over it with the yellow paint onto my fabric. The yellow blends with the blue to create green where the interfacing is and yellow where there are cut-outs in the interfacing. It's a fascinating, tricky process to get the hang of getting a crisp print (assuming you want a crisp print). When I decided to try a smaller stencil so I could use a smaller squeegee to screen the color in only one or two swipes I got more crisp results. I also used a freezer paper stencil along with the interfacing stencil to get the crisp edges of the almond-type shape. I plan to try this method again with thickened dyes one of these days. I have no idea what I'm going to do with the fabric that I printed yet. I'll just call it building my stash for now. Happy making stuff! ~Sonja
